How will you observe National Safety Month?

June is National Safety Month! The goal of Summer Safety Month is to increase public awareness of the leading safety and health risks that are increased in summer months to decrease the number of injuries and deaths at homes and workplaces.

In celebration of National Safety Month, we want to be proactive in maintaining safety measures and being preventative to help provide a safer environment for our family. These are the four things we did as a family to work towards becoming proactive with our safety!

According to the World Health Organization, drowning is the 3rd leading cause of unintentional injury deaths worldwide and there are an estimated 236,000 annual drowning deaths worldwide. This was one of the main reasons why we put swimming lessons at the top of our priority list for our children to learn!

When looking for a swim class, we searched for a class that would be cost effective, convenient, and fun for our children. We partnered with Australian Swim School to have our girls learn to swim. They’re a swim school with locations in Fullerton, Santa Ana, Fountain Valley, and Tarzana. They offer small class sizes at flexible times to fit your schedule and are also reasonably priced. The instructors are friendly and accommodating while working with your student to help them achieve their swim goals through encouragement and positive reinforcement!

The best thing about their classes is that they truly work with your child to help them become comfortable in the water and to succeed in mastering the techniques to help them learn to swim. They also celebrate wins and going up in levels so your child can set their goals and you can watch them achieve them!

CPR Classes are also another way we can be proactive and be prepared in case of an emergency. The Red Cross offers classes with price ranges from around $60-$80 a class. You can look for and sign up online at your convenience.

Do you have a safety kit in your car? I can’t count the number of times we’ve had emergency booboos at the park and our safety kit has come to the rescue. You can purchase one or create one with specific things you think your family would use or need.

Lastly, we discussed with our kiddos about what to do when we experience an earthquake and what to do in case of an emergency. We reviewed all the things they should do if they were to get lost and how to use the phone to call for help in case they needed emergency assistance.

How can you get involved and observe National Safety Month?

  • Put together a first-aid safety kit for your home and car
  • Participate in community emergency preparedness events
  • Take a CPR Class
  • Learn to Swim
  • Have an “in case of emergency” plan and discuss it with your family.

We partnered with Australian Swim School, however our experiences and opinions of their services are our own.
